Εύκολα λοιπόν έπεσε σκοτάδι σε όλες τις άλλες σκέψεις του και αυτές δεν εξαπλώθηκαν. Ουσιαστικά λοιπόν, ο Δραγούμης παρέμεινε άγνωστος στο ευρύ εθνικιστικό κοινό. Ο Δραγούμης δεν ήταν απλά ένας εθνικιστής. Ο Δραγούμης ήταν ιδεαλιστής και ήξερε γιατί απέρριπτε τις ιδεολογίες που μαίνονταν να καταστρέψουν τα έθνη, την κοινωνία και τον ευρωπαϊκό πολιτισμό. Μια από αυτές ήταν και ο φιλελευθερισμός τον οποίο βλέπουμε στις μέρες μας πως έχει επικρατήσει και ότι έχει διαφθείρει τα άτομα και κατά συνέπεια τα έθνη. Είναι καιρός πια, μετά από τόσα χρόνια, να μάθουμε πως έβλεπε ο Ίων την ιδεολογία του φιλελευθερισμού και τι σκέψεις αποτύπωνε στα «Φύλλα Ημερολογίου» του:
