Iran added an advanced new warship to its naval fleet in a ceremony in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Saturday, as shown in footage released by state television. The Sahand destroyer is a domestically-built warship equipped with a close-in weapon system which is capable of destroying any approaching target from two kilometers away, according to the state. It can also undertake long-distance missions and its main structure is capable of radar evasion. The Sahand destroyer is the third and most advanced destroyer to be produced as part of the Iranian navy’s Mowj (Wave) project.

US warships in the Taiwan Strait are a part of a “pattern of gradual acceleration and escalation of the threats to China,” American writer and academic James Petras says. On Monday, two US warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait, according to an American military spokesman, amid heightened tensions with China. The USS Curtis Wilbur and USS Antietam carried out a routine transit to prove US commitment “to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Colonel Rob Manning told reporters at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.
