Greek fire brigade said the wildfire death toll has risen to 76 on Tuesday, after wildfires ripped through the Rafina region near Athens the previous day. The seaside village of Mati in Rafina remains the worst affected. All that remains of a once vibrant settlement are burnt-out cars and shells of buildings. A survivor felt “complete desolation and sadness” over the events.
Aerial footage of the wildfires in Greece’s Attica region near Athens, was released on Tuesday, showing the scope of the affected area, which can be seen still smouldering. Reportedly, more than 74 people were killed and many more were injured, while local authorities fear that the numbers might grow.
The horror of war can be seen in the Syrian city of Raqqa. The bodies of more than 1,200 civilians, the majority of them women & children, have been discovered in three mass graves there. It is claimed they were killed when the US-led coalition bombed the area.

Back in the 1970s, a slogan sometimes heard was “if they’re black, send them back!”, a reference to the removal from the UK of what might be called “the blacks and browns” who had come to the UK in increasing numbers since 1945. Indeed, the 1970s (the time perhaps most significant in my own initial political development) was the halfway point between the almost entirely white Britain of my childhood (I was born in 1956) and the Britain largely composed of non-whites which emerged in the 1980s and has carried on in ever-intensifying form to the present day.
