Greek fire brigade said the wildfire death toll has risen to 76 on Tuesday, after wildfires ripped through the Rafina region near Athens the previous day. The seaside village of Mati in Rafina remains the worst affected. All that remains of a once vibrant settlement are burnt-out cars and shells of buildings. A survivor felt “complete desolation and sadness” over the events.
Aerial footage of the wildfires in Greece’s Attica region near Athens, was released on Tuesday, showing the scope of the affected area, which can be seen still smouldering. Reportedly, more than 74 people were killed and many more were injured, while local authorities fear that the numbers might grow.
