My assignment to the guard regiment “Grossdeutschland” in Berlin was actually a form of rest and recreation — my first leave from the front — after my many wounds and in recognition of my combat decorations, including the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves and the Close Combat Badge in Silver (48 days of close combat). Later I would be wounded again. In all I was to command the guard regiment for only four months, since I felt obligated to be back with my comrades at the front.

Norske kvinner og norske menn!
Proklamasjon til det norske folk:
Etter at England har brutt Norges nøytralitet ved å utlegge minefelter i norsk territorialfarvann uten å møte annen motstand enn de vanlige intetsigende protester fra regjeringen Nygaardsvold, tilbød den tyske regjering den norske regjering sin fredelige hjelp ledsaget av en høytidelig forsikring om å respektere vår nasjonale selvstendighet og norsk liv og eiendom. Som svar på dette tilbud om løsning av en for vårt land helt uholdbar situasjon, har regjeringen Nygaardsvold iverksatt alminnelig mobilisering og gitt den hensiktsløse ordre til de norske stridskrefter å motsette seg den tyske hjelp med væbnet makt. Selv har regjeringen flyktet etter således lettsindig å ha satt landets og dets innbyggeres skjebne på spill.
Under disse omstendigheter er det den nasjonale samlingsbevegelses plikt og rett å overta regjeringsmakten for å verne om det norske folks livsinteresser og Norges sikkerhet og selvstendighet. Vi er de eneste som i kraft av forholdene og vår bevegelses nasjonale mål kan gjøre dette og derved redde landet ut av den desperate situasjon som parti-politikerne har ført vårt folk opp i.
Regjeringen Nygaardsvold er trådt tilbake. Den nasjonale regjering har overtatt regjeringsmakten, med Vidkun Quisling som regjeringssjef og utenriksminister, og med følgende andre medlemmer:
Professor Birger Meidell, kirke- og undervisningsminister.
Politisjef Jonas Lie, justisminister.
Dr. Gulbrand Lunde, sosialminister.
Direktør Albert V. Hagelin, handels- og forsyningsminister.
Arkitekt Tormod Hustad, landbruksminister
Professor R. Skancke, arbeidsminister.
Godseier Fredrik Prytz, finansminister.
Major R. Hvoslef, forsvarsminister.
Alle nordmenn oppfordres til å vise ro og besindighet i denne for vårt land så vanskelige situasjon. Ved felles anstrengelser og alles godvilje skal vi berge Norge fritt og frelst gjennom denne svære krise.
Jeg tilføyer at slik som situasjonen har utviklet seg, er enhver fortsatt motstand ikke bare nytteløs, men direkte ensbetydende med kriminell ødeleggelse av liv og eiendom. Enhver embedsmann og andre stats- og kommunale tjenestemenn og i særdeleshet alle vårt lands offiserer i hær, marine, kystartilleri og luftvåben er forpliktet til å lyde ordre utelukkende fra den nye nasjonale regjering. Enhver avvikelse herfra vil medføre det alvorligste personlige ansvar for vedkommende. Forøvrig vil det bli gått rettferdig og hensynsfullt frem mot alle landsmenn.

Paula Hitler wrote: “Adolf was the greatest son of our Austrian homeland” and “for Germany he always wanted the best.” (October 12 and December 28, 1957.) In her most famous statement, she wrote to German newspapers:
“Gentlemen!
Never forget this: Your names will long be forgotten even before your bodies have rotted away in the earth. But the name Adolf Hitler will still be a light in the darkness.
You cannot murder him by drowning his memory in your slop-buckets and you cannot strangle him with your filthy, ink-stained fingers. His name exists forever in hundreds of thousands of souls.
You are far too insignificant to even touch him.
He loved Germany, he fretted over Germany. When he fought for honour and respect it was for German honour, for respect for Germany and when there was nothing left, he gave Germany his life.
What have you given so far? Which one of you would give his life for Germany? The only things you care about are riches, power and never-ending luxury items. When you think of Germany, you think of indulging your senses without responsibility, without cares?
Trust me on this: The Führer’s utter unselfishness in word and deed alone guarantees his immortality. The fact that the bitter fight for Germany’s greatness wasn’t crowned by success, as with Cromwell’s in Britain, has a lot to do with the mentality of the people involved.
On the one hand the Englishman’s character is essentially unfair, ruled by jealousy, self-importance, and a lack of consideration. But he never forgets he is an Englishman, loyal to his people and to his crown. On the other hand, the German with his need for recognition is never first and foremost a German.
Therefore it doesn’t matter to you, you insignificant beings, if you destroy the entire nation. Your only guiding thought will always be: me first, me second, me third.
In your worthlessness, you will never think of the welfare of the nation – and with that pitiful philosophy you wish to prevent the immortality of a giant?

Ich hatt’ einen Kameraden
It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce to you that Commander Matt Koehl died in his sleep in the night between October 9 and October 10, 2014, at the age of 79.
There are no words to express the personal loss to us who were close to him and to the Cause for which he was selflessly fighting his entire life.
His brilliant intelligence, his linguistic skills, and his great talent for music would have opened all doors to him in society, had he not chosen to follow his inner calling to fight for the National Socialist idea. This is not the time, nor the place to discuss his achievements or his disappointments. All his life he did what he found to be right, without ever thinking about the consequences for himself.
The Movement was his life – but his life was so much more than the Movement. His sense of humor, his extensive knowledge about so many things, and his inquisitive mind made it a great pleasure to be in his company. I have spent many months on the road with Matt Koehl over the last 40 years, and it was never dull. I feel a never-ending gratitude for the privilege of having known this extraordinary man and for the knowledge he so readily shared with me. We could have our differences about this, that, or the other, but such differences were never allowed to stand in the way of our friendship. Behind the public figure Matt Koehl, the Commander, there was a private Matt Koehl, the human being that so few people ever met, but whose warmth and wit were life giving – also when the going was rough.
He will not be forgotten!
