UNDERSTANDING FASCISM

In the twentieth century no set of ideas has been so vilified and misunderstood as that of Fascism. Prewar Fascism has been depicted, through the machinations of the social democratic media and countless works of political comment, as a political system based on reactionary oppression and the antithesis of all that is good and necessary for human advancement. In the present day it appears that its original significance has been abandoned and it is now invariably employed as an abusive epithet for the purpose of defaming political opponents, most of whom do not qualify for being so dubbed. A degree of blame rests with the perpetual polarisation of politics into battalions of “Left” and “Right” whereby all shades of political thought are considered only in these obligatory terms.

It is fitting to begin with a tale of rape. With Tarquin the Proud’s tyrannical reign as the last Roman monarch, Romans were eager to explore a new form of government: the republic. The ‘Rape of Lucretia’ was a popular tale which detailed the downfall of Tarquinius: Roman soldiers away at war decided to return and surprise their wives. Only Lucretia, wife to Collatinus, had been loyal and chaste while her husband was gone, but Tarquin’s son, Sextus, returned and raped her. She told her husband what had happened, then took her own life.

“Crystal Night” is the name that’s been given to the night of 9-10 November 1938. In almost all large German cities and some smaller ones that night, store windows of Jewish shops were broken, Jewish houses and apartments were destroyed, and synagogues were demolished and set on fire. Many Jews were arrested, some were beaten, and some were even killed. The “Reich Crystal Night” (Reichskristallnacht) was one of the most shameful events of National Socialist Germany. Although the Jews suffered initially, the greatest harm was ultimately done to Germany and the German people.
