“Tania’s encounter with the Hegoumen of Hebron.

It was 1974. I was in a bad relationship and needed to get away, Jerusalem, I thought, was a far enough way from New York to do the trip.

When I arrived at the convent in Gethsemane they gave me a small cell, I helped out when needed, and did some icon restoration.

One day someone came by with a van and said they were going to the church in Hebron. I was eager to join them. The van was full. We had about 8 people, or however many people a large van holds and the driver.

After going through various check points, we arrive at the church, we file out and stand in a tight group alongside the van. A priest comes running over, directly towards me and says ‘Tania, I have been waiting for you, come’, and immediately whisked me off to church where he performed a rite over me. I have no knowledge what this rite was, even after asking many priests about it no one was able to recognize it.

After that, we all gathered in the dining room for refreshments. Later he prepared a cigar box for me with dried leaves from the old oak, and back we went to Jerusalem.

Soon thereafter, it was Easter. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was packed. I was standing on the ground floor by the columns, Father Ignatius, was all the way in the back on the balcony. Everyone was waiting for the Holy Light to descend. Before the ‘official’ light descended there was suddenly a lot of noise coming from the far corner of the balcony.

Fr. Ignatuus’ candle had lit on it’s own. Only later was it followed by the ‘official’ light in the Holy Sepulcher. I was standing next to a woman who came all the way from Australia just to witness it. I suddenly grabbed her and dragged her away as a huge bolt of lightning descended and stopped at my feet. The woman from Australia, saw nothing. later as we headed back from the service, everyone I walked with couldn’t stop talking about Fr. Ignatius and his candle.

It was a long time ago, but I will never forget the priest who ran up to me saying ‘Tania, I have been waiting for you, come’. The man was an undeniable saint.”

Elder Ignatius Raksha, spritual son of Saint John Maximovich – based on the new book “Hegoumen Ignatius of Hebron”.
