China has officially announced that it will finish building its own global satellite navigation system next year, having started about two decades ago.
The £7billion ($9billion) project, called Beidou, has been designed to rival and eventually replace the US-developed Global Positioning System (GPS) in the country.
It’s part of Beijing’s move to lessen its dependence on American technologies.
