Theresa May has announced Sajid Javid as the new Home Secretary after Amber Rudd stepped down over “inadvertently” misleading MPs on immigration targets.

Mrs May was forced to make yet another Cabinet reshuffle after Ms Rudd stepped down amid mounting pressure over her handling of the Windrush “fiasco”.

The Hastings and Rye MP quit on Sunday evening before she was due to make a statement in the House of Commons on the targets and illegal migration on Monday.

Mrs May said she was “very sorry” to see her successor leave the post, while Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott said she had “done the right thing”.
